IanG, I suppose a snotty remark deserves a snotty remark. I don't think many of us are deluded enough to think we impress anyone with our bookshelves... not these days. I was actually just looking for some new avenues to explore from a comments board that has long been populated with an exploring kind of folk. You know... you can be on topic in a narrow literal kind of way... and you can be on topic in a looser broader kind of way. The latter seems to be more akin to the art of Gelb, but the former certainly has its place here, and shame on me for dogging it. It came from jealousy, I suppose. It's hard to stick to discussions of gigs when you don't have a snow ball's chance in hell of ever getting to attend one. Blaine, thanks again for that book recommendation. That sounds fun, and of course I want weird.

Point taken, IanG. Don't know why I felt the urge to denigrate. It's true that one can get recommendations in many other places, but this is, or could be, a nice place to share recommendations among folks who like Giant Sand... in other words, people of a particular kind of taste. It used to be commonplace to hear ideas for other things on this board... coming from Howe as well. It was on this board that I first heard about Amelie (the film) and about The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle (the book), etc... Hey Blaine... has been a long time indeed. Are the Blades still Aimless? I hope you are doing well. Thanks for the book suggestions. Take care, all.

Been a long time, James

Books – I’d suggest the new bio on Tammy Wynette. It is great. (Author Jimmy McDonough also wrote the Neil Young bio Shakey.) As much about Tammy as it is about George Jones, some great stuff on Billy Sherrill and others. You want weird? These folks are waay out there.

Of course , James, we can't be having discussions about upcoming G Sand gigs on the G Sand board when there are books to be read (or bought and placed in a conspicuous position on the bookshelf unread, most likely).

I don't have a problem with off topic discussion, I do it all the time, but denigrating the actual purpose of the board seems a bit pointless.

There are plenty of sites that will recommend books to you, but in the meantime I'd suggest 'Wolf Among Wolves" by Hans Fallada.

Thanks philZ. In unrelated news, barely relevant to Giant Sand, but more interesting than "will howe being doing a date in spelgeldorf in june," I just saw in Film Comment that a super 8 camera enthusiast Tuscon driver back in 1968 shot a lot of footage of Warhol and company shooting "Lonesome Cowboys" and that the footage was shown recently in some Tuscon art gallery. That sounds fun. I'd love to see it.

the railway is a small little venue, but good. funnily enough it is right next to the railway station so allows easy access from london etc.

can we have some confirmation of the dates? there appears to be no official information on any of the various sites??!!!!

07:18 on Monday May 24 2010 - here

Ian G
I'm pretty sure it's the 'Railway' in Winchester but it does not seem to be confirmed on their website yet. The 'Gateshead' festival claims that they will be hosting the only appearance of Howe with the 'Band of Gypsies' (I'm sure someone else had a band of Gypsies.....) as well as the show with Kristen.
Still no sign of a show in Scotland, perhaps if I moan about it for long enough.....

Best book I've read this year is Chronic City by Jonathan Lethem. Re: new music, not much, though the new Jim Lauderdale is the most impressive songwriting i've heard in a long time.

anybody feel like sharing their favorite music, movies, books... from the past year... say.... since January 2009? I get all kinds of stuff where I work, but it's glut, too much to sift through. I need help focusing in on some wonders, if there are any. I really liked the Broadcast & The Focus Group Investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age CD. I share Trish Keenan's love of the old 70s film, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. Can't think of much else right now, and I don't know if that's because I'm brain dead after a long day, or if there was just not much interesting going on in music, books, and movies. I did like A Serious Man. Also My Winnipeg (Guy Maddin). Man, My Winnipeg was 2008. Time flies.

Well, I am going to the Barbican, 3 of us coming down from Scotland for what should be a special show.
(Subject to volcanic ash)
I saw a load of other Euro dates around the Barbican date but not seen any other UK shows advertised yet, fingers crossed though.

Hey J. Marcia & I are well and fine, and we've added a third member to our little familyqz, now two years old. She likes Confluence, dances and strums on her little guitar. As for the web site, I stopped paying for web space when I realized I was sick of adding to it, messing with it. There may be something somewhere on my-space, but I've forgotten how to even log in. Might be gone... haven't checked in ages. PROvisions supplements, eh? Sounds like it's time to catch up on the Ow Om releases. I've kept up with the official releases, of course... got to support that which you hope to see continue to exist..., but I've tried to hold off on swimming into much of it, like trying to make a good meal last as long as possible. I'm still finding new flavors in the older stuff. How's it going with you? Making any music? Good to see you still hanging out here. Clare wants to type... lkvbxhxhx

which record/artist moniker has the short tape recorded piece of Kurt Wagner singing while parked at an airport (nashville?) and the "song" is interrupted by a security guy, and then it resumes? Anybody? Can't seem to find it. So many CDs.

having been devoted to the the full exploration of the back catalog, which is always revealing new wonders, I've neglected the newer stuff... with the full intention of getting to it in due time, assuming this life is long enough. Thought, "enough of this," and am on my second listen to PROvisions. Sweet. Those who haven't already been well immersed in sand will get a sweet introduction if this is their intro to Gelb and crew. Also been revisiting Glum of late. Still nothing like this stuff. Cal----o doesn't come close, but that's apples and oranges and no need to compare. Thanks, Mr. Gelb, for getting out these sounds. Wish I could see a live performance, but I understand why you'd want to spend your road time in the old country. Not much action on this board these days. Used to be that there was a near constant conversation going on here. It was fun. Maybe all the sandinistas have found something better to do than peck at their computer keyboards.
