Hi, I was wondering if someone here could answer a question for me. I know that FLAC is lossless; however, I'm wondering if there is any loss involved when converting a FLAC file into a WAV file and then back into a FLAC file again? Any help or useful answer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Frank C - Sno Angel Ruins Garden
Just read the comments in favour of .., against .. Well, I have to say, 2006 has been a great year so far because my favourite two musicians have released one of their best works in years. Howe´s No Angels ist just great, I really love every track, Howe´s voice is so smooth and lovely playing with all those various styles. Songs like "the farm" or "Neo filler" send shivers down my spine.

And "Garden Ruin" is also one of Calexico´s finest releases. My favourite after "Black Light". Great and subtle songwriting. What a relief that there are no more tex-mex-guitars and cliché- trumpets! Instead they occasionally managed to rock (more than I had expected!). "Letter To Bowie Knife" is one of their finest songs ever. Hope that it will substitute the standard "Crystal Frontier" encore on concerts. "All Systems Red" has a lot of Giant Sand vibe in it, especially the feedback play that has that certain Howe flavour. Hope they know how much they owe Howe.

So, whatever problems there are bewtween those musicians, there´s a lot of great music happening on both sides. At least one positive side effect of the split. I´m thankful for that.

Anyone heard Wreckless Eric's re-done version of Whole Wide World as an England World Cup Song ? It's the best world cup number ever.

Yes - fine new chapters in the journal. And the coolest GS band photo ever! Howe - nevermind the just-on-time-travel to Newcastle (Ol Bob will be worth it anyway): as the recording of the Hamburg crumble revealed, it was a very entertaining show with lots of highlights and great moments.. Maybe there were some strange vibes in the room back then which made it a rather uncomfortable experience. Blame it on the circumstances. However - it was one of those shows that stuck in mind. So good luck and a lot of fun in Newcastle!

howe. nice diary posting. funny enough, i saw the trudell movie last night as well...although it was in austin and it was a different day than your last night i guess...i was suppossed to have seen it some months back in santa fe, but didn't for one reason or another. glad i did finally though. also, nice remembrence of house of freaks. i remember getting their monkey of a chain gang cassette back in the late 80's or so...even before i had added giant sand to the collection...they helped inspire a short lived two piece of bass and accordion i was in. although we weren't really any good. and finally--as you said, it is neat to talk with the musical heroes of your formative years...you too deserve to be commended, or thanked, or something, for talking to those of us for whom you were one of those musical heroes of the formative days. so thanks.

howe.......considering the jet lag possibilities with the 'newcastle cluny' gig. maybe it be a good idea to prepare and play the the same setlist as the recent 'munchen' gig but maybe play it in reverse order, all on piano, with one eye open and one closed.mmmmmmmmm.

looksta forward to postin a gig review of the newcastle 'cluny' gig the night prior to the 'barbican' slot. 2 howe giggos in the space of a glorious month for the north east wilderness of britain (i omit the word 'great' before 'britain' from the point of honesty and it looks sweeter and also the use of non capitals puts us in our place)

yip, a good slang of wordage by young blaine and a recording of strange kookiness by mr. gelb. the record seems to hit the notes of favour with press and the sound on the grooves too is fresh. 'the farm' indeedy is a strange one, howe almost digs into a monologue groove and sits in tight looking for the ghost vocal, this sits smartly with a tom verlainesque - breakin in my heart guitar cut. one thing i noticed with this record is that it sounds proper when played at a louder volume than i normally play things at. you can hear the rattlin of voice strings and raspin of deliberation. 'worried spirits' does it for me, that drum sound, barely a snare in sight, blam blam blam blam. strangely enough i find 'howlin a gale' one of the tracks i can run with least. maybe it be the van halen guitar squeal - my fault folks - i prefer confused restraint in the noodling department. 'neon filler' is a beauty (champion as we say in this neck of the world), the vocal drip from the speaker with those solar sparks hittin the ceilin. a thankin you all. ( i wrote a far meaner greater version of this the other eve, but the norwegian vodka which i was eagerly enjoyin caused me to spill the post). oh yeasy yes the choirs subtle creepage on on 'chore' makes me hackle with wonderdom. a great. thanks for lettin me waffle.

Hopefully this isn’t too long of a post. Here is a review that is scheduled to run in the next issue of www.vitalsourcemag.com

Howe Gelb - 'Sno Angel Like You (Thrill Jockey)

Best known as leader of Tucson-based Giant Sand, Howe Gelb's musical resume is a multi-headed hydra. Not enough space here to do it justice, but do yrself a favor and look into his discography. His projects -- from idiosyncratic solo piano to loud rock and roll merely scratch the surface of his artistic restlessness. The one thing he has not attempted is recording an album with a Canadian Gospel choir in the midst of an Ottawa Winter. Enter 'Sno Angel Like You.

Gelb is nothing if not fearless with his music; never overtly religious but certainly spiritual . Recruiting the eleven piece Voices of Praise Gospel Choir and armed with Arcade Fire drummer Jeremy Gara, Gelb began recording tracks. "Rumors of a better world, when we get to leave," Gelb sings on the opening cut and the choir is already humming in idle. It is evident the spaces in Gelb's music will become part of the recipe on this album. Keenly working to build tension and release throughout, Gelb's creaky vocals are set in relief to the choir's power and majesty. The combination of Howespeak (not unlike Mike Watt's native tongue) and the collective vocal swells illuminate more so than reiterate.

It is a with trio of songs that Gelb, band (very nice slide guitar by Fred Guignion) and choir make music for the ages. "The Farm" -- a tune based on the unswerving strength of love written by Gelb's late mentor Rainer Ptacek -- opens on a wobbly groove, as if the writer was still inhabiting the tune. Yet as Gelb gets to the chorus the amassed voices echo in confidence "Some-one, some-where, some-place, -- out there" and the leap is easy as it is obvious. As the record unfolds, the subtle backing the choir lulls you into a sense of security not unlike Mom's home cooking. Then Gelb unleashes "Howlin' a Gale". This is as cantankerous and rockin' as Gelb allows himself on this album. The tension has been building as guitars twang and slide, the chorus recalls Lou Reed (circa Coney Island Baby), and the choir morphs into the very definition of the song's title. Justly inspired Gelb peals off a slow flurry of squealing and damaged harmonic grace notes on electric guitar. Lastly Gelb resurrects "Neon Filler" (from Giant Sand's 1994 album Ramp), to a late night Gospel throb abetted by a soothing Hammond organ. What emerges is one of the best performances of his long and winding career. Gelb's world-weary vocals recounting a funeral scene as the tune trundles along. Then as if by instinct the choir senses Gelb's fatigue, simply and buoyantly prop him up, singing "... light is the Moses, splitting the waves in a a sea so dark."

Hi Mikus, sorry I lost your email ad. It vanished with the old comments board. My stay in Brussels is shorter than I thought. But I´ll attend Howe´s show anyway. Buxfix will be there, too.
